Old Wood Surfacing

                       OLD WOOD SURFACING

Old Wood Surfacing (OWS) is new to the Timber Frame industry.

What's Old Wood Surfacing?

It's the ability to impress 1 of 3 different textures into new wood to make the wood look like reclaimed timbers.

Why the need for Old Wood Surfacing?

Reclaimed and/or destressed lumber recently has become an interest in many of our projects, despite all of its beauty and history that comes with reclaimed timbers, it can be difficult to work with at times, which is something we know from being in the Timber Frame & Log Industry for years. We knew there had to be another way to get all of the beauty that reclaimed wood offers but without the high costs of dismanteling, inventoring, storing, availabity issues, structural issues, and possible pesticide concerns.

What wood species can we apply the OWS too?

Our standard wood species that we typically offer are: Eastern White Pine, Douglas Fir, White/Red Oak, & Western Red Cedar.  But we can apply OWS to just about any wood species.

What are the limitations to impressing the wood?

The wood needs to be flat.  The minimum size needs to be 3/4" thick.  The maximum size is 40" wide x 15" tall.  The maximum length is at 40'.  We have applied OWS to timbers, timber frame structures, flooring, and structural laminted beams.

What are the advantages of OWS vs. Reclaimed?

First and foremost, COST vs Reclaimed Timbers.  On average there can be a 50% cost savings.

No issues getting timbers, sizes, or lengths for your project.  You can order more with no issues.

In some applications, especially commercial projects, you cannot use the reclaimed timbers structurally.  So you pay over twice for the use of reclaimed timbers (non-structurally) (decorative) and still have to build a structural frame around them.
